“Urban folk art” is how Susan describes her genre of art. “It’s hip, cool and contemporary and resides outside of the classically traditional conventions.”
Influenced by the work of Jacob Lawrence and William H. Johnson, Susan’s angular and curved figures appear to dance on each painting. Her characters’ expressionless faces contrast their dynamic movements, and friendship remains the most recurrent theme in her art. Her paintings are light-hearted, fun and joyous!
“My intention is to imbue each work with kind, kinetic, and soulful energy, often expressed through the hair or hands. The paintings are vibrant, positive and transmit a zest for life.”
A native Washingtonian, Susan is a self-taught artist, who received non-art degrees from the University of Virginia and Georgetown University.
Exhibits include: the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s “Showcase Noir”, Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, Pittsburgh; Art Around Gallery, Philadelphia; “Two Artists: One Show”, Philadelphia; “Soulpurpose Exhibit”: Penn Gallery, Pittsburgh; Industrial Bank’s Author and Artists Showcase, Washington, D.C.; Congressional Black Caucus, Washington, D.C.; “Can You Imagine Me”, Rowan College Beitzel Gallery, Glassboro, New Jersey; National Medical Association, Philadelphia; “Sliding Through the Funk”, Washington, D.C., Keystone Cluster Links’ Founder’s Day : Kimmel Center , Philadelphia, Indie-Life Media Philadelphia, and numerous conferences and private shows.
In 2012, Canaan Christian Arts Ministry awarded Kenny Gamble, Stephanie Mills and other artists, works by Susan. In 2017, she designed and created the cover art for the George Washington University anthology “Diversity and Inclusion: Advancing GW’s commitment to Academic Excellence.” In 2019, coasters featuring Susan’s paintings were sold in boutiques in both Philadelphia and Vineyard Haven. SoulVision Magazine featured Susan in the October 2019 issue. In 2020, her design was chosen for flap board display in the We Vote Contest promoted by Oat Foundry, the Committee of Seventy and La Colombe. Most recently, Susan provided illustrations for the academic text, “Do Right by Me” (Harris and D’Angelo).
Susan Jarvis Ragland originals adorn the homes of sports professionals, television personalities, and private art collectors throughout the United States. She hopes you enjoy her work.
