About

“REAL TALK”- Dementia/Alzheimer’s began as a vision of LaVern Tarkington Ed. D. & Grace Wright, Ed. D, members of First Institutional Baptist Church as a possible way to share their personal challenges and experiences as caregivers with fellow congregants and their community in a helpful and supportive manner. They gathered a team of clinical, spiritual and community resources (Banner Alz, FIBC H.E.L.P.S. Ministry, and FIBCO Family Services, Inc., respectively) to bring their vision to life. Real Talk is designed and presented as an interactive series of shared experiences and expert presentations about the challenges and impact of Dementias/Alzheimer’s that affect so many in the Black/Brown, and other underserved communities, who might not otherwise have access to such educational/informational support.

The “Real Talk” series was created and designed by the dedicated team of:

LaVern Tarkington, Ed.D,  Dorthea Williams,  Grace Wright, Ed.D, and Patricia Cook.

Danielle Goldfarb, MD, Naudia R. Moorley, Psy.D,  and Heather Mulder.

Chiquita Taylor, and Ernie Urquhart.

Technical support and coordination by Dan & Evelyn Watson-Bey of East Hill Media.

This functionally, racially, and culturally integrated team brought their research, education, experiences and hopes to the planning table to create a Real Talk series that others can experience and take home with assurance that they are not alone and can/will survive what they must face. The series is designed and delivered in bite size time frames to inform, educate, inspire, and apply as needed by the participants.
